Scaling OpenStack with WHMCS automation - Sharktech's Story

Postby Joanna » 13th April 2025, 11:20 pm

When a hosting business starts to grow, the challenges aren't always where you expect them. The infrastructure might be solid: OpenStack runs well, and the hardware holds up, but the real friction often shows up elsewhere. Delays in provisioning, billing systems that don't quite keep up, and backend tasks that eat up more time than they should can slowly drag things down.

That's exactly what Sharktech ran into. As their services expanded and the customer base got bigger, the tools they had relied on started falling behind. So instead of stretching those systems past their limits, they hit pause and took a hard look at what actually needed fixing.

We caught up with Tim Timrawi, Sharktech's CEO, to hear how they kept growing from that turning point on, supported by OpenStack Projects For WHMCS. By adding a layer of custom automation to our module, they combined provisioning, billing, and client onboarding into a single, scalable workflow that's easy to keep under control.

In the interview, Tim walks us through:

  • Why their existing tools couldn't keep up as things got more complex
  • How automation became a must-have, not just a future goal
  • What changed for their team once repetitive tasks were off their plate
  • And how the improvements made a difference for customers (even if they didn't see the changes directly)
If you're running OpenStack and finding that manual processes are starting to slow you down, Sharktech's experience might offer exactly the kind of insight - and inspiration - you've been looking for.
